Create modern packaging for traditional product?

Golestan; a well-known, trusted name came to Zibaloon with a new challenge; a completely unique packing for saffron. Iran’s saffron is renowned worldwide but why the influence of the proper packing on consumer’s buying behavior was never considered? Was caring too much about the phrase “made in Iran” the main reason? Golestan had a different opinion. With numerous ideas in hand for other products there had never been a packing model for saffron even beyond Iran’s borders. A crucial factor to our client which played a key role in not reaching the perfect packing that could live up to world standards. What made the project an interesting challenge; the durability of the saffron had to be considered first.

From Ethnic to Ergonomic

Our team unanimously agreed the design should match the modern world’s perspective that ruled Zibaloon’s internal operations. Saffron is an all Persian product but why should its packing take on a handicraft, ethnic turn? We have seen it before; saffron in a completely new packing which had an ethnic appearance. Golestan’s goal was to supply across the globe so we aimed to introduce an ergonomic, exquisite design in alignment with Zibaloon’s style. The first packing designs turned out exactly how we expected. We chose among the selected 3D models. Finally the best design in prototype process turned to the first real sample. Further study of the sample revealed all the factors which led to a successful package.

Unique brand, Unique package

To add even more ease of access two earring-shaped curves were applied on the sides. The ergonomic design became Golestan’s new packing. A unique design on the transparent label in Zibaloon’s minimalist style, reached its ultimate beauty. The transparent label not only added to the packing’s uniqueness but portrayed Golestan’s brand in the heart of saffron, without a background, inside the packing. An idea which was actually mentioned in the first sketches; a prestigious identity, A job successfully done.

Challenge :

We needed a packaging design idea that not only appealed to local consumers but also embodied new characteristics that made it attractive globally, on the other hand it needed to be cost efficient, ergonomic, while increasing the durability of product beyond other available examples in the market.

Result :

Our industrial design team along with graphic designers did further study on all existing samples in the market and put together a 3D prototype that embodied all the necessary factors for a successful package. The outcome was a sleek, compact, transparent container with two earring shaped curves on the side for easier access and a box that held it on three sides while strapping the logo on top using the saffron as its backdrop. We also made sure the package could be shelved horizontally or vertically; stayed strong under compression and maintained a strong visual presence.
